In the words of one consultant I worked with "this place is a zoo" and YOU are the monkey. Problems were here before covid, and yes, it took a pandemic to make some things better. If you have any issues with how things run on the ward, you'll be lucky to get any changes through the ward manager (who are too terrified to do anything without being told to from above). Usually the best way to get any action is to talk to infection control, or to the head of nursing and put an infection control angle on your concerns. Seriously, infection control seem to be the only people anyone listen to (which is, I guess, better than nothing). There was talk about switching to a computer based system. However bad the IT system is/will be when you're here, I guarantee you it's better than the game of "hide the drug charts from the doctors" and "the notes went missing, do you mind quickly reclerking this patient." There's a lot of burnout amongst the general medical team, so don't expect much sympathy when it's your turn to burn out. Bullying is a known problem in a couple departments. Cardiology has the worst reputation, I've known people seriously considering leaving medicine because of the bullying in cardiology. I knew a junior who was bullied into coming into work despite having authorised annual leave. This has been a known problem for years, but because you're temporary and the consultant involved isn't, it doesn't get fixed. Geriatric medicine has one or two consultants who will occasionally lapse into bullying patterns, but will respond appropriately if you speak to them about it. Female Asian doctors get a hard time from nurses on the stroke ward. If you're in your foundation programme, the good news is the foundation programme director is an absolute gold star. You'll get the help you need from them. Seek them out early. I mean it. Winter is a tough time here. In the past, due to pressure they closed surgical beds for more medical patients. Well, with no more medical doctors, you might get a ridiculous amount of work. I may seem down on this place, but there are some positives. The nurses I worked with in A&E, and on medical wards are absolutely top notch. I can't count the number of times they saved me. The doctors mess is comparatively good, though small and dark. There's a pub nearby, but it was closed due to covid. You'll be happier if you live in Canterbury and commute because Ashford is dull. You'll learn a lot while you're here, just not necessarily medicine.

Well supported and friendly department. A bit chaotic at first - took me a while to get into, but I think that is natural for any rotation. Very supportive consultant body, encouraged myself to get into research; I recommend for those who want to do surgery. Not far from London. Oncalls are fair. No nights as an F1. Dedicated ward SpR so never deserted if things go wrong as an FY. Ended up working here more thanks to COVID, and enjoyed it. Would recommend.

Overstretched hospital, good for acquiring confidence, not so good for extracurricular activity. Found the medical/geriatrics side of things reasonably well supported with some concern displayed towards our welfare. By and large a nice, tight-knitted community with a few seniors on a power trip having found themselves big fish in a small pond.
