The mess is reasonably sized, a bit grotty but generally acceptable, sometimes has snacks in it from Mess Committee, and pizza twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) at 1300. Room is currently undergoing some renovations with the trust and the door access has been reclaimed so it is less of a storage space for SERCO. I hear there is a good library.
There is a staff multi-storey new JDs are automatically allowed a space in, you are given a link to a self-evaluation of your rota when you start to see if you are eligible but this is not supposed to be needed for JDs. Costs £30/month. 16 week waiting list from when you complete the e-application in the meantime they will keep giving you stacks of...More
Clinical notes are largely paper-based, there is an electronic system which is reasonably good which covers e-prescribing, radiology, investigation reports, requesting bloods/scans, viewing results, doing discharge summaries.
The hospital is served by the U6 bus route with fairly frequent buses during the daytime, although you'll have trouble getting home if you rely on this for shifts finishing in the late evening. There is also a free staff shuttle minibus between the Royal South Hants and UHS sites every hour during normal working hours. Buses 6, 17 on the Bluestar n...More
The canteen is not open overnight, the only overnight food provided is a Costa which can heat up sandwiches/toasties etc. The canteen is open during the day, the food is a bit soggy and a bit pricey for what it is but it's nice to know that someone gets to profit off the workforce needing to eat
Local area mainly has families. Can be a bit dodgy so stick to well lit roads if walking home when dark.
Have rotated between all ICUs within this hospital and all are okay. The bedside nurses are 5* and are great at teaching local protocol and catching silly night shift mistakes, and also don’t contact you for every little thing like I’ve experienced in DGH ICUs, and most of the consultant body really enjoy teaching. Sometimes a little too much, as r ...More
Wards are constantly under-staffed. Not enough SHOs but also not enough registrars to round on an ever increasing number of inpatients. Consultants are not adequately involved with their patients once they're wardable but to be fair they're recently trying to improve in that regard. Heavy ANP involvement in ward rounds disadvantages SHOs' learning ...More
Under investigation by the GMC for poor feedback from past trainees. The consultants are nice and care about their patients. However most aren't interested in teaching. The workload is intense and you will be doing ward jobs all day. Almost no chance to clerk, go to clinics, or go to theaters. The department is constantly understaffed and sometimes ...More
You will be covering majors or ambulatory. Resus is mostly covered by registras, consultants and ACPs. The trainee ACPs (tACPs) work at an F2 level and get treated very well by the consultantcy who don't expect them to know basic clinical skills. The ACPs work at an ST3 level and will gladly take up resus treating all the most interesting and usefu ...More
This trust hates doctors. As a doctor below the ST3 level, you will not be learning how to proceed in your career. Departmental teaching is sparse at best and the "mandatory" teaching day sessions are often cancelled or filled with junk like lectures on patient flow. Any interesting role is taken up by ANPs. This includes acute stroke calls, simple ...More
