Mess is away from main hospital building, cold,, dusty and inactive. Poor. --> there is now a new mess (opened in 2023) located off the main corridor in the centre of the hospital
About 20pm for car parking, compared to general NHS standards is pretty great as all ground level and can usually get a space about 2 minutes walk from the front door.
E notes with eprescribing. Bleeps in hospital. OOH is managed via patient track. Some radiology requesting still stuck on paper forms.
There are buses that go on site.
No food overnight and no vending machines. --> there are now vending machines with microwave meals on site (available near maternity)
Tend to live in Manchester. Bolton as a town is deprived and little to do in the centre. The Hospital itself is a couple of miles south of Bolton itself, in very generic suburbs, but is close to the motorway and some nice hillwalking nearby.
Pretty good place overall. Consultants are all friendly and several are keen to teach. Easy to get stuck into IR. It is very DGH-style with consultants reporting everything across different subspecs and not always the highest quality radiology perhaps, but would recommend for any ST1-3 to get some experience.
Worked here as an ST3 in EM (paeds block). Department runs like a teaching ED (protected teaching that isn't cancelled even if only one trainee in that group), lots of consultants are keen to teach and encourage trainees to teach too. Regional head of school and ACCS TPD work here - promoting a good dept. Weekly journal club and all encouraged t ...More
I'm an opthal ST yet they are treating me like an FY1, doing discharge letters and getting the patients to read a Snellen chart.
AMU as an F2. This job involved covering different areas of acute medicine: D1 ward (AMU), clinical decisions unit (CDU), SDEC, post take ward round, and sometimes clerking in ED. I enjoyed working in all these areas, and there was a lot of varied pathology, but very busy! The vast majority consultants are lovely, very approachable, and willing t ...More
FY1 job on H3 ward (stroke rehab). As with a lot of geris wards, most of the patients are medically fit and just ongoing with therapy, however there is the occasional acutely unwell and complex patient. Pretty dull with not much to do, but at least you will never finish late. Note the job involves covering general medicine on calls OOH. The con ...More
