In hours workload was very manageable (I was almost always on Urology; I've heard that workload was harder on Gen Surg, but still less than Medicine). Great mess - Sky + Sky Sports & Movies, PS4 with FIFA. Great computer system in the hospital. Phelbs a bit inconsistent (but urology has manageable patient numbers to take bloods from). The reg, while I was working there, was great, so great support in hours. Generally friendly department. Departmental teaching (Gen Surg) was a bit inconsistent. Few opportunities for theatre in Urology itself (more available when on-call for Gen Surg).

Supernumerary. Never any problems getting leave at any time. Really great if you want to do O&G or a surgical speciality as you can get loads of time assisting in C-sections. Can swap with GP trainees who don't like assisting in theatre if you want more theatre time. Would highly recommend going on a course like Basic Surgical Skills before the placement so that you can make the most of this opportunity if that's what you want. You get what you put into this job. If you want to revise for a post-grad exam there's a fair bit of time to do so. Teaching was inconsistent.

A supportive environment for an FY1. Always SHOs around at a minimum (with a reg also almost always available). Consultants also almost always available. The nurses were great. Almost all were able to do bloods and cannulas and would be happy to do these so long as juniors reciprocate when they're busy. Great computer system. Great mess. Consultants working there at the time could often overkill on their plans. Blood gas machine available on the unit. Sometimes difficult to find computers. Weekly departmental teaching + cover for foundation teaching and general medical teaching.
