I loved this job! I did the JCF job and it was honestly fantastic. The job was 9-5 M-F so you are the continuity on the ward which becomes very satisfying. There are two FY1s assigned to the gastro team as well. The gastro team only have a max of 10 patients so you have tonnes of time to not only offer top-notch care to your patients, but also really teach and develop the FY1s too. There are tonnes of opportunities for extracuricular work. I was invited down to endoscopy on Tuesday afternoons and they got me hands on with scopes (harder than it looks ...). I had a clinic on Thursday afternoons. There are MDMs (with free lunch ...) 3 times a week, where I would learn a lot, for example about managing biologics, and histology. There is a lot of research ongoing in the department which they are keen for you to be involved in. The IMT teaching was the best I've come across. Perfectly pitched level, and only delivered by consultants/senior registrars. There was also lots of opportunities to get involved with med student teaching. There was also lots of free time on the ward if you wanted to revise for an exam. If you want to really enjoy life, but also enjoy medicine too, this is absolutely the job for you.

I generally really enjoyed my time at Kings. The GIM rota can be intense but I made some really good friends on my blocks (and you mainly work with the same people) so it never bothered me much. The patient population is very diverse with a lot of interesting cases. The consultants are generally all very friendly (my GIM was with a lot of resp/endo docs) and take time to get to know you. The registrars were all great and supportive. I worked here when covid really kicked in and the hospital were great at looking after us. In a time when it was so easy to feel anonymous I genuinely felt that the higher up team cared. And a lot of effort was put into supporting us. The covid rotas were well designed. The IMT teaching was really excellent - you could really tell you were getting taught by world experts. There was a series by a haematologist which I'll never forget. Really fabulous teaching. I hope they've kept it up after covid.

This job is very well supported by registrars and consultants alike. The consultants are a very friendly bunch and are all on first name terms. They’re generally very approachable and seem to genuinely care. That said, I found this job quite a slog. A ‘short day’ is 8-6, and the workload is fairly high. There is a culture of staying late, often for quite minor jobs, and working through lunch which I found fairly frustrating. There is also a lot of extra paperwork (endless MDMs that need documenting!). The decisions are also very senior led so the SHO job can feel more like an FY1 job at times (lots of EDNs etc), however on balance there is also excellent and approachable support at any time for queries. Everyone was very willing to teach and I found the teaching to be absolutely excellent. Both pertinent and excellently delivered. The registrars are also very supportive for getting procedures signed off and are very patient and instructive with this. I’ve marked this job down for friendliness, not for the medical team but for the nurses. The nurses are some of the most unhelpful I’ve worked with, which doesn’t ease the job! The hours made this job tough for me as if a short day (without lunch!) is 10hrs, add in some frequent long days/weekends and it becomes tiring fast. I’m personally not at all interested in renal medicine, so the quality of the work didn’t balance out enough of the slog for me. If you are in interested in renal then this would likely be a tiring but enjoyable rotation with lots of opportunities for research and mentor ship from a caring consultant body.

A very nice and friendly department, with some quirky characters as is to be expected in Neurology. The neurology department is twinned with the hyper acute stroke department and so on calls primarily cover Stroke. The on call rota is relatively intense from an hours commitment with 1 in 2.5 weekends (including 1 weekend of nights). There are 7 nights spread over 2 months (Mon-Thur as one block and Fri-Sun as another). The rota is managed by a departmental rota coordinator who is easily contactable over the phone, however does not respond to emails quickly. For organising leave/study days or exams, it is generally advisable to contact them over the phone via switch board or on their mobile. The rota coordinator does not work Tuesdays. Nights are generally relaxed as you are covering the HASU with 30 patients at risk of deterioration, inpatient Neurology which is usually stable and an elective neurology admission ward which is again generally stable. There is limited departmental support over night, there is an on site registrar, but their input for general medical issues may be more limited. However there is good critical care outreach support which more than makes up for it. Teaching can be quite limited both from the neurology and stroke consultants and registrars unless it is asked for. There is weekly teaching on a Friday morning where cases are reviewed and discussed, it is aimed at the neurology registrars, but has some useful insights into the thought process of neurologists when assessing a case. There are multiple opportunities for QIP, Audits and Case reports. The consultants are very keen to support them, but you will hae to generate them yourself. There are regular TIA clinics to easily get clinic numbers from and are available for SHOs twice a week every week minimum. As a training post it will give you some opportunities to gain experience in the management of acute stroke complications, general neurology and an appreciation for the rare and unusual conditions neurologists are called to consult on, however there is a lot of repetition and management of low acuity patients which is not useful for training and can be frustrating on occasion. It is also a good department to work in when preparing for exams or other assessments as there is ample opportunity for self directed learning or conference attendance.
